Stand-Alone Ingredients

Before we dive into the treatments and hair masks you can make yourself, let’s first talk about just a few single-ingredient treatments that can have huge positive impacts on your hair. This is a short list, however, there are tons of natural remedies that all work to improve hair. Not covered in this list are aloe vera, fish oil, ginseng, rosemary oil, jojoba oil, apple cider vinegar, and eggs.

Massage

Massaging your scalp with an oil or hair mask can be done to restore hair growth and stimulate the scalp, which can improve hair thickness. Taking the time to massage your scalp, whether you are in the shower or are doing it as a part of your hair care routine, will not only help you relieve stress and tension, but will encourage hair growth in the dermal papilla cells, or the cells that are in your scalp!

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is great for giving your hair the hydration and moisture it needs, but be sure you do it on a weekend or on a day where you don’t have any commitments. Coconut oil contains fatty acids that penetrate inside the hair shaft and reduce protein loss from hair. You may want to use coconut oil before your scheduled showers so you can leave it on for a few hours, or for the whole night, before you wash it out. Massage the coconut oil into your hair for improved hair shine and growth. You can either use coconut oil on your ends or cover your entire head with it, depending on your hair needs and goals.

Onion Juice

This sounds weird, but we swear by it! We even use it in our own products, like our Organic Black Rice and Onion Juice Leave-In Rinse. Onion juice is incredible for your hair, promoting hair growth, improving circulation, and preventing hair loss. Onion juice also promotes collagen production, which helps the production of healthy skin cells and hair growth. You can mix onion juice in with another remedy or use it alone, either way, you are still giving your hair the nutrients it needs.

Avocado

Avocado is rich in Vitamin E, and many people believe that it is a great moisturizer for this reason. To use avocado, it is best to combine it with other ingredients, whether it be coconut oil or olive oil. You can make a paste out of the mixture and apply it to your hair and scalp.

Easy Mixtures To Make Yourself

There is nothing like natural remedies to make the most of what your hair has to offer. If you want luscious locks, combining these essential ingredients together for a hair mask is one of the best ways to do that! Well, that and using the organic hair products found in our online shop.

Hair Mask for Detoxifying Hair

Throughout our lives, we put various products in our hair that don’t actually end up ever leaving, well, at least not all the way, that is. Chemicals and additives stay in your hair for years, slowly compiling and adding up until your hair losses its natural shine, becoming brittle and dry. The two ingredients, which you have likely heard before, bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar, are fantastic at detoxifying your hair and cleansing it. Apple cider vinegar is used in hair masks to restore the hair’s natural pH balance, breaking down any build-up by cleansing the scalp. Bentonite clay is also amazing for reversing hair damage. Plus, this treatment is huge to get the natural bounce back in your curls, especially after treatments like blow-outs. All you need is:

  • Apple cider vinegar

  • Bentonite clay

Mix these two ingredients together in a plastic or wood bowl. Keep the mixture away from metals to maintain the integrity of the bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar. Be sure your mixture is of a liquid, thin consistency, meaning that you will have more apple cider vinegar than bentonite clay. The clay is already quite powerful, so you don’t need too much. Section your hair and detangle it if you need to before spraying it with warm water.

Apply your mixture to your hair, working into all parts of your hair and every individual curl, even your hair follicles. This treatment can replace your shampoo, especially if you are doing it before a shower. Leave the mask on for 25-30 minutes before rinsing out and following with your conditioner.

Hair Mask for Frizz

In this DIY hair mask, banana is the main ingredient. Bananas are a great natural remedy for hair conditioning, as it is rich in natural oil, potassium, carbohydrates, and vitamins. All of the ingredients, banana, plain yogurt, and honey, work together to soften and add shine to your hair, helping prevent or repair any split ends. All you need is:

  • 1 sliced banana

  • 2 tablespoons of plain yogurt

  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Combine the ingredients in a bowl or blender until everything is combined well. Apply to damp hair, starting from the top and working your way down. Tie your hair up and cover with a shower cap. Let your hair sit in the mixture for 30-45 minutes before washing it out with your regular shampoo or conditioner.

Hair Mask for Damaged Hair

Your hair can become damaged from a variety of sources: heating and styling tools, the environment (a.k.a pollution), hair dye, and more. The good news, however, is that it can be fixed. This olive oil, egg, and avocado hair mask is packed with omega-3 fatty acids that provide strength and shine to your hair, plus it is full of antioxidants, which help fight off free radicals. All you need is:

  • Half an avocado

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Combine the ingredients together in a bowl, and apply to wet hair with your fingertips. Start from the bottom and work your way up to your scalp. Wrap your hair into a bun, and cover with a shower cap. You can let your hair sit like this or you can blow dry your cap-covered hair for 10 minutes before letting it sit for another 20 before washing it out in the shower.

Hair Mask for Dry Hair

If you have dry hair, you are most certainly not alone. This is an issue that many people struggle with, but now there is an easy solution! If your hair is looking a little parched, then try this mixture of egg, honey, and apple cider vinegar. It is a great hydrating treatment that also provides shine and nourishes without weighing your hair down. All you need is:

  • 1 teaspoon of honey

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

To apply it, simply combine it in a bowl — you can double the recipe or half it depending on your hair length — and leave it on for 30 to 40 minutes before rinsing.

Hair Mask for Flakes

A dry and itchy scalp is so irritating, which is why it takes a sweet-smelling hair mask to make things a little better. Using brown sugar and coconut oil, which smells and sounds like a base for cookies, you can exfoliate the scalp without being too harsh on your skin and stimulate hair growth. The sugar granules reduce dandruff and itchiness while the coconut oil slows down hair loss because it penetrates deep into the follicles. It also moisturizes the hair, adds shine, and prevents hair breakage. All you need is:

  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil

  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

Work into damp hair after shampooing, being sure to focus on the scalp. Rise the mixture and then follow with your conditioner.

There are tons of other DIY hair masks that you can find on the internet; these are just a handful. It may help to do some research to find a hair mask that works best for your hair, depending on what type of texture you have as well as your specific hair problems.
